What's the inspiration behind your label?
Nonclassical is all about giving a platform to emerging artists and composers in the early stages of their careers, and giving a voice to the best new music on the contemporary classical scene.
How did you start your label?
Nonclassical was founded in 2004 by composer Gabriel Prokofiev. Alongside monthly club nights showcasing the new best of the contemporary classical music scene, Gabriel wanted to bring the exciting new music from these nights to a wider audience, and that’s when the label began. Over 12 years and 23 releases, Nonclassical has worked with some of the biggest names in contemporary classical music including Tansy Davies (releasing her debut album Troubairtiz), Joby Burgess/Powerplant and Aisha Orazbayeva, whose debut album Outside is a must have from our catalogue. More recently, Nonclassical has become a charity and is focusing on artist development - working with the best new artists to help them kickstart their careers and bring their music to a wider audience.
Any interesting facts about your label? Does your label have a ‘USP'?
Definitely! Nonclassical is all about driving the evolution of new classical music – be it instrumental, vocal, electronic or experimental. We’re interested in pushing the boundaries of what people think is ’classical music’.
Where do you go to discover new music?
Performers at our monthly nights are always a good source of interesting new music, as are the myriad contemporary gigs across London. On the digital side, Bandcamp, YouTube, Soundcloud, Bleep and radio shows like Late Junction are all great sources for finding great stuff. We also love shops like Sound of the Universe, Sister Ray and Phonica.
What’s your favourite thing about Independent Label Market?
The breath of labels and music that’s on offer. It’s great to be able to talk to people and other labels directly about music (and of course the good beer!)
What deals and steals are your bringing to the market?
We’re bringing an exclusive cassette of our latest release Outside the Lines - Vol. 1. This is the first in a new EP series, aiming to support the best emerging musicians and composers on the contemporary classical scene. It was released digitally on 10 March, but this is the only opportunity to get a physical copy of the EP – on cassette!
