What's the inspiration behind your label?
The label was started as an easy and affordable way to release music for our friends who were in bands, as there was a limitless amount of talent in Liverpool surrounding us. While also focusing on the emerging psychedelic scene in Liverpool at the time, we were aggravated by the rising cost of vinyl production so decided to use cassettes as a medium for the releases to keep the nostalgia factor in the scene at an affordable price.
How did you start your label?
Blak Hand Records is a spin-off project of Blak Hand Design, an illustration company formed in Liverpool now run by myself, Brit Jean Williams.
After a lot of thought, designer Alex Wynne, filmmaker Dan Hewitson and I came up with the logo and concept for the label and the rest is history. Since then, Alex has moved on to focus with his garage/psych rock band Strange Collective, while Dan continues to work on his film projects and clothing company around the U.K, leaving me in charge of the label.
Any interesting facts about your label? Does your label have a ‘USP'?
Blak Hand Records sets itself apart from the other labels at the ILM, as we only specialise in cassette tapes. If you don't have a tape player don't worry - we supply a digital download with each release.
Where do you go to discover new music?
Personally I find my music through Spotify and YouTube. The suggested songs from bands I already love are the ones that quickly become my new favourites.
What’s your favourite thing about Independent Label Market?
My favourite thing about the Indie Label Market is the sense of community and togetherness. You can go up to your favourite labels, have a chat, crate dig and find something you didn't even know you wanted. Plus, the beer garden is alright too!
What deals and steals are your bringing to the market?
We have exclusive Blak Hand Records Summer 2017 baseball tees, the new Katie Pham & The Moonbathers cassette (limited to 30), hand embroidered Blak Hand patches and some long-sold out limited edition cassettes.
